Red Sox Continue To Imitate Mets: Youkilis Out For The Season

When the Red Sox acquired fragile SP John Lackey from free agency last off-season we all thought they were giving an awful lot of money for someone who spends so much time pampering his delicate shoulder.  It is now well after the allstar break and while Lackey has not been the ace caliber pitcher they expected, he has managed to stay healthy.  Only, whatever contagious and gross injury bug he had with him on the Angels is now spreading through the Boston locker room.  Since Lackey joined the team almost every super star, including Josh Beckett, Clay Buchholz, Dustin Pedroia, Victor Martinez, and Jacoby Ellsbury, and even the not so super Daisuke Matsuzaka, Mike Lowell, Jason Varitek, Mike Cameron, and Jed Lowrie, have all spent various amount of time licking their wounds on the DL this season.

We can now add their most consistent hitter, Kevin Youkilis who tore a muscle in his right thumb and requires season ending surgery, to that list.  It now looks as though the Red Sox will have to put the weight of their play-off chase on the shoulders of 34 year old David Ortiz.  My guess is, his old @$$ brittle knees can’t handle it.

A Great Day For A-ROD

The Yankees found themselves playing against a 3 game losing streak, and A-Rod hitless in his last 17 at-bats–3 years ago to the day that Alex Rodriguez hit his 500th home run.  On a day where the sun left the stadium stifling and humid, it seemed as though a breeze picked up for one moment… A moment that would ultimately change Rodriguez’s life forever…  A moment that saw San Fransico judge Vaughn Walker declare that the ballot initiative outlawing gay marriage violates due process, and is therefore unconstitutional according to the 14th amendment.  This ruling should go before the suprieme court, who will further rule on a state’s right to ban same-sex marriages.  With in no time California’s acceptance of gays could be spread to NY and all over America.

Today A-Rod and many others celebrated a day that could be a true stepping stone towards equality.

Surprising Findings on Forbes’ SportsMoney 50-50 List

Every summer, Forbes Magazine assembles it’s SportsMoney 50-50 list that ranks the world’s 50 most valuable athletes and sports franchises. It gives us average Joes a sneak peak into our favorite, and most hated players’ bank accounts for the season. Sometimes what we find is very disturbing.

The top few teams on the SportsMoney list are not shocking in the least. Manchester United is atop the heap, closely followed by the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Yankees. What may shock you to find though is the team sitting at #4.

Washington Redskins – NFL – Est. Value $1.55 Billion

More valuable than AC Milan and Chelsea, combined, the Redskins haven’t won a title since 1991, but have maintained the top spot in highest grossing NFL teams for over 3 years now. To clarify, this list carries all 32 NFL teams, proving that the NFL is infinitely more profitable than the NBA and MLB. I wonder if Jason Campbell tried to use this in his negotiations for a new contract.

Weaver Calls Angels Fans’ Booing of Lackey ‘Disappointing’

John Lackey won a World Series and a ton of games for Angels fans over the past 8 years, but once he signed with the Boston Red Sox, none of that matters anymore to Southern California.

“I mean, this guy has done too much for this organization for eight years, and to get an ovation like that was very disappointing…. People don’t understand what happens behind closed doors. All they see is him going to our so-called rival in the playoffs, but he’s a great guy and was a great mentor. I enjoyed my time with him, and I’m glad he was here. I owe a lot of where I am today to that guy.” Weaver said after the Angels’ 4-2 loss on Tuesday night in Anaheim.

Now, I understand Angels fans’ frustration with Lackey, but even Johnny Damon got some applause when he returned to Fenway with the Yanks. Of course he’s now booed every time he steps to the plate there, but they clapped for him once.

Stay classy Anaheim. Don’t be so 909.
