Church takes out newspaper ad to beg fans to pray for Montreal Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens are so bad this season that the Montreal Catholic Church bought ad space in French-language newspapers begging fans to pray for the worst team in the NHL’s Eastern Conference.

Prions is French for “Let Us Pray”, and the #8 slot is significant because 8 teams from each conference make the NHL playoffs. Wishful thinking, prayers, and public pleading may seem like a noble gesture by the religious fan base in Montreal, until you find out that the whole thing is a marketing ploy executed by a local PR firm that the Church pays for public relation stunts like this.

The Bos advertising agency is in charge of reminding people that the Catholic Church still exists and that they’re just regular people like you and me. They know the Canadiens can’t do this on their own, and they want your help. Put aside your prayers for peace in the Middle East, putting a stop to world hunger, and poverty in America. The Canadiens need those prayers you selfish jerks.

And only praying for 8th place? Talk about low expectations and weak faith. I don’t know about you, but when I ask God for favors I reach for the sky. I’m not asking him for a ham sandwich. I’m asking for a million dollars.Who only strives for 8th place?

Canadians. That’s who.
