This week’s Super Bowl hoopla can be dizzying for NFL rookies. Especially rookie Quarterbacks who may be looked to lead their new team on the biggest stage of them all.
We caught up with the Indianapolis Colts’ rookie QB, Curtis Painter this week to find out how he’s handling the media frenzy and intense pressure he’ll face on the bench this Sunday in Miami.
FTR: ” Curtis, how does it feel to be playing in your first Super Bowl in only your first year in the league?”
CP: ” I won’t be playing. Coach told me to stay as far away from the field as possible this Sunday, or he’ll trade me to the Browns.”
FTR: ” Haha, no seriously. What has been going through your mind as you prepare to take on the Saints? How do you gameplan around someone like Darren Sharper?”
CP: ” Honestly I don’t know. I’m not allowed to even go into meetings this week, because Coach is afraid that the Saints will pick up on passing plays just by the look on my face if I know what the play is when I’m on the bench.”
FTR: ” Ok. Tell us about media day. Over 2,000 media members this year attended media day making it quite the spectacle. How did you handle the barrage of questioning?”
CP: ” I couldn’t get in. Security laughed when I told them I’m on the team. It was embarrassing actually.”
FTR: ” Wow. Sounds like you’re not even really getting the Super Bowl experience.”
CP: “It’s not all bad. Coach gave me a souvenir T-shirt and hat.”
FTR: ” Well that’s cool. So how bad is Dwight Freeney’s ankle? Is he still gonna be an impact on the Saints offense?”
CP: ” I’m not allowed to talk about Mr. Freeney.”
FTR: ” Oh, so the team is trying to keep that close to the vest huh?”
CP: ” No, it’s just that, well, Mr. Freeney told me after my performance against the Jets in week 16, I’m about one step away from being put in traction for the rest of my life. So, I’d rather not talk about Mr. Freeney. He is a great man.”
FTR: ” You’re kind of a tool huh?”
CP: ” I hate my life.”
