College football rivalries are the life-blood of the sport. Cross-town and in-state hatred breed the best that tv has to offer in the waning months of each year. Small insignificant tokens of victory like the gold pants in Columbus or the Apple Cup in Washington give passion to games that mean nothing to people in other time zones. The Territorial Cup dates back over 110 years in Arizona, and causes more white trash arguments each year than a Jerry Springer DVD box set. But this year it seems as though rivalry games are just a formality.
